Spring Term 2024

Welcome to Spring Term 2024

It’s a Mystery!

As well as myself, our Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 team consists of Miss, Gee, Miss May, Mrs Hill and Ms Dannan this term. Miss Gee will be teaching on a Thursday and Friday, whilst I will be teaching on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As a team we rotate teaching and activities so that the children work within their age phases.

A message from Miss Gee

I am really pleased to have met so many of you both at the Christmas Fair and during the time I have spent in school. I am looking forward to getting to know more about you all and your children over the next few weeks. Please feel free to come and introduce yourself to me at the end of the day.  I look forward to meeting you all and being part of your children’s learning journey whilst they are at Ashwater Primary School.

Our topic this term is ‘It’s a Mystery’. The younger children will be exploring light and dark.  The children in Key stage 1 will be learning about the Space exploring different areas of the curriculum with this as our focus. In History we will look at the history of Space. We will learn about Neil Armstrong, Tim Peakes and what happened during the first landing on the moon. In Geography we will be learning about different locations within the UK, focusing on the names of the different countries, the capital cities and the features of these places.    The children will also be finding out about different materials and their properties. They will participate in many different experiments. In Art we will be focusing on painting and colour mixing. This will involve the children learning about famous artists and art work.  In Design and Technology, we will be looking at the different food groups and nutrition. This will then be used to support the children in planning and creating different recipes.

PE is on Wednesday afternoon, where they will be working on developing functional skills which they will apply to different games.  On a Friday, the children will be having a session with Mrs Bailey.

Please make sure you keep up to date with our school newsletter to ensure you don’t miss anything.  Please send your child with their water bottle every day labelled with their name and in anticipation for the weather worsening, please ensure children bring a coat, hat and gloves on colder days.

You are welcome to send pictures through Class Dojo, to share your child’s achievements from home. These contribute to your child’s assessment and are a vital part of the progress your child will make.  This term, we are introducing a ‘Show and Tell’ session. This will take place on a Friday afternoon and will start on Friday 12th January. We will let the children know and send you a Dojo message when it is their turn.

Reading Books

Preschool- they are welcome to change their library books every day.

Reception, Year One and Two- The development of reading is of utmost importance.  Please remember to bring in your reading books and diaries every day. The children need to read 5 times a week and the reading record needs to signed by an adult.

Home learning;

Home learning for KS1 & Reception children will continue to be set via Class Dojo and is set on a Friday. It is often better to do a little but often.   Please continue to read with your child 5 times a week as we have seen great improvements when this is done consistently. Remember, the reading does not need to be the whole book but a page will still benefit. You could also each read a sentence each or read one and repeat it until they feel fluent in their reading.   Once the children have completed RWI they will be able to access Reading Buddies which is an online reading system.   Spellings will continue to be RWI words that we using during the week as well as common exception words.  All reception and KS1 children will be using MathSeeds for homework.
