Welcome to Class 2!
Class 2 brings together our new Year 3s stepping up into Key Stage 2 alongside our older Year 4s. Together, they show us what it means to ‘Aim High, Be Resilient and Take Care Of Each Other’, setting a fantastic example, looking out for one another, and representing St Giles with real pride. Our classroom is built on hands-on, enquiry-based learning that gets children asking questions, thinking independently, and having a go.
We are also very lucky to be joined by Mrs Williams again this year. Her continued support and enthusiasm are a wonderful asset to our class, and we are very pleased to have her as part of the Class 2 team.
What We’re Learning in Autumn 1
- English: Inspired by Satoshi Kitamura’s Stone Age Boy, we will write narrative stories and diary entries. We’ll also use Michelle Robinson’s How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth to write instructional guides. Along the way, we are focusing on sentence structures, prepositions, conjunctions, and fronted adverbials to express time, place, and cause.
- Whole Class Reading: Our shared book this term is the adventure story The Stolen Spear by Saviour Pirotta.
- Maths: Following our Year 3/4 plan, we dive into Place Value to build strong number skills. A quick note for Class 2: we focus a lot on times tables fluency this year, it makes a world of difference to their confidence when they sit their Multiplication Timetable Check (MTC)!
- History: How did life change in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age? We’ll explore prehistory, practise ordering events using BCE/CE timelines, and examine primary and secondary sources.
- Science: What is a magnet? Children will explore forces, test different materials, investigate magnetic fields, and see how opposite poles attract while like poles repel.
- Art & Design: Can I create tone and texture? Can I use shading and blending to show light and shadow effects? We will practice drawing techniques to create a Paul Cézanne-inspired still life, alongside talking about what art is and how we judge it.
- Religion & World Views: What makes some places sacred to believers of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faith? We will learn about the significance of holy spaces like synagogues, churches, and mosques.
- RSE / PSHE: We’ll look at relationships, fair play, and why rules keep us safe, using Stop–Think–Solve strategies to work through everyday problems.
- Physical Education: The children will focus on:
- Gymnastics & Dance: Exploring space through levels, directions, and rhythm, and building routines with core body shapes, balances, and movement.
- Ball & Game Skills: Improving passing, dribbling, and control with both hands and feet. We’ll practice creating and blocking space, defending, and keeping possession.
- Music: in music we follow the Charanga Music Scheme. Each unit of Work consists of clearly sequenced lessons with planning, key learning and outcomes that support the National Curriculum.
In Class 2, we encourage children to take responsibility for their learning both at home and at school. Here is how you can support your child with their weekly routines:
- Reading: Please aim for your child to read at least 5 times a week at home. Kindly sign or initial their reading record each time, as we count these up every week to celebrate their progress!
- Maths (Doodle Learning): We set 20 minutes of Doodle Learning once a week, usually linked directly to the topics we’ve been covering in class.
- Maths (Times Tables Rock Stars): In Class 2, we put a huge emphasis on children knowing their times tables fluently. We ask that children log on for 5–10 minutes, 3 times a week to build their speed and recall.
- Spellings: Children will have 5 spelling words written into their spelling journals each week. Please spend 5–10 minutes, 3 times a week practicing these at home.
