Our intent for our physical education curriculum
Across The Carey Federation, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting life long, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport. Swimming is taught to all children in order to achieve the required distance of 25 metres as well as the knowledge of safe self-rescue techniques in different water situations. We believe an important aspect in addition to physical health is the mental wellbeing of all of our pupils. With this in mind, we aim to provide children with skills such as yoga.

Our curriculum equips children with the skills to lead healthy and active lifestyles and challenges them to ‘Aim High’ in all aspects of their physical and mental wellbeing. We aim for children to have a knowledge and understanding of a range of sports and through our links with the local secondary schools, every child has the opportunity to ‘Build Relationships’ in the wider community at the various sports festivals and competitions. These events promote teamwork and require the children to ‘Be Resilient’ as well as ‘Respectful’ and sporting; to win and lose with grace.
We implement the curriculum through carefully planned sequences which enable children to learn new skills and knowledge , whilst consolidating previous learning. Mapping what is taught in each year group, allows teachers to plan for progression. Please see our progression grid below:
